Steps of cultivation
  1. Soak seeds in cold water for 24 hours, then drain the seeds
  2. Prepare growth medium and generously moisten the surface
  3. Distribute seeds evenly and avoid partial accumulations, moisten
  4. Cover and weigh down with any cover (e.g. a paving stone)
  5. Very long germination, it occurs in 7 - 10 days
  6. Remove cover and transfer to aquaponics system
  7. The ripe microgreens can be harvested after 16 to 24 days
  8. The best time is when the microgreens are approx. 5 cm tall and the real leaves are small
  9. Harvesting should take place in the morning or evening due to cooler temperatures

Chinese Surah Tree microgreens (Toona sinensis) require specific pretreatment due to their hard seed coat and slow germination characteristics. Seeds must be soaked in cold water for 24 hours prior to sowing, then thoroughly drained to prevent waterlogging. This species is classified as a heavy feeder with high nitrogen requirements, necessitating nutrient-rich growing media or supplemental fertilization during the growth cycle. Germination is exceptionally slow compared to other microgreens, taking 7-10 days under optimal conditions at 21°C with consistent moisture. The blackout period should be maintained throughout germination, with the cover tray weighted to encourage stem elongation. After removing the cover, provide 12 hours of light daily from fixtures positioned 60 cm above the plants. Total cultivation time ranges from 16-24 days, with harvest recommended when plants reach approximately 5 cm in height and true leaves begin to emerge . The mild onion flavor develops fully only at this stage. Harvest during cooler morning or evening temperatures to maintain post-harvest quality.
