El-Sayed Khater is a researcher and lecturer in Agricultural Engineering at Benha University in Egypt.  He is the author of a book titled Aquaponics, published in 2015 by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing, which focuses on the effects of nutrient sources, water flow rate, and gully length on lettuce production in aquaponics systems using drained fish water compared to standard nutrient solutions.

Study on Plant and Fish Production in an Aquaponics System under the Influence of Different Hydraulic Loading Rates

A more recent study (2023) led by El-Sayed Khater and colleagues investigated the effects of different hydraulic loading rates (HLR) on the performance of fish and plants in an aquaponics system with tilapia and lettuce.  The study found that a hydraulic loading rate of 2.4 m/day⁻¹ maximized plant nutrient removal, root length, and shoot/root weight, while 3.0 m/day⁻¹ resulted in the best fish growth parameters, including weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio.

His work is supported by Benha University and the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) and funded by the Egyptian Science, Technology & Innovation Funding Authority (STDF) and the Egyptian Knowledge Bank (EKB).
