The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), also known in Austria and South Tyrol as Paradeiser or Paradeis (less commonly Paradeisapfel), is a plant species in the family Solanaceae (nightshade family). It is therefore closely related to other edible plants such as the potato (Solanum tuberosum), pepper (Capsicum), and eggplant (Solanum melongena), but also to plants such as deadly nightshade, mandrake, angel's trumpet, petunia, and tobacco (Nicotiana).
